“Follow your heart” is a quote embraced by billions of people. Essentially, it’s a belief that your heart is a compass inside of you that will direct you to your own true north, if you just have the courage to follow it. It says that your heart is a true guide that will lead you to true happiness,if you just have the courage to listen to it. It says that you are lost and your heart will save you. This quote can sound so simple and beautiful and liberating, but it won’t lead you to God’s flourishing and perfect path for you.
Is This the Leader You Want to Follow?
Our heart’s always have selfish desires. Think about it for a moment. What does your heart tell you? Our heart can ponder things that aren't pure and perfect, before the Lord. “Follow your heart” certainly isn’t found in the Bible. The Bible says our hearts have a disease: Jeremiah 17:9 declares, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Our hearts will not save us. We need to be saved from our hearts. Jesus, the Great Physician, lists the grim symptoms of this disease: Matthew 15:19 says, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts--murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” Jesus is the only One that can cleanse our heart.
The truth is, no one lies to us more than our own hearts. Our hearts are not compasses. They don’t lead us into truth, grace, and love. They don’t tell us the truth; they just tell us what we want. Jesus is our guide. Our hearts were never designed to be followed, but to be led. Our hearts were never designed to be gods in whom we believe; they were designed to believe in God. Our hearts cannot save us. What’s wrong with our hearts— is the heart of our problem. If our hearts believe in God, as they are designed to, then God saves us and leads our hearts to exceeding joy. Hebrews 7:25 says, “ Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” Psalm 43:4 declares, “Then I will go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God.”
Don’t follow your heart; follow Jesus. John 14:1 says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.”
The Lord knows your heart. Just listen to Him and be in His Word daily. You never know when the Lord is going to speak to you. Be ready and have your Bibles open. Following God’s path for your life for it brings many blessings and treasures! Never look to the right or left… follow God’s straight path. Psalm 31:3 says, “For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name's sake You will lead me and guide me.”
Jesus is your Shepherd. Psalm 23:1 says, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” John 10:11 declares, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Listen to His voice in His Word and follow Him. John 10:27 says, “ My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 14:6 says, “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” He is the truth, He is the way, and He will lead you to life!
